Silver "Freedom Tower" coins are fakes -- of a sort

If you watch The Daily Show, you're probably aware of these new "silver dollar" coins that are being sold. (Not only did Jon Stewart mockingly mention the coin on his show, but the commercial airs quite often during Comedy Central's late-night schedule.) They're coins made (allegedly) from silver found in a vault beneath the rubble of the World Trade Center in New York.

Guess what? Nearly everything about them is a sham.

Phil Dodson of the Macon Telegraph reveals that the coins aren't American government issue, they're only technically covered in silver, and they "have about as much chance of becoming historically meaningful as my cat – possibly less so."

Read the full article here, and caveat emptor – especially when you're buying mail-order goods offered on TV.
